Trick or Taters

Halloween is already in full swing across the country! And while we all love a sweet treat this time of year, it’s important for revelers of all ages to also think about the best way to stay fueled. Potatoes are nutrient-dense and provide the energy, potassium and vitamin C you need to power your day—or, in this case, your Halloween!

Potatoes also offer a chance to add some new traditions to your celebrations. Ready for a new spin on Halloween (and the chance to win a $100 grocery gift card)? Try these four fun ways to fuel your spooky season with America’s favorite vegetable, the potato!

Potatoes or Candy?

Want to surprise and delight your trick-or-treaters? Offer them a potato! In neighborhoods across America, potato-lovers are offering spuds or chips as a fun and more nutritious alternative to candy. And kids of all ages are taking the taters! Families love the break from sweet treats and the nutritional value the vegetable brings to the Halloween bucket.

What are some of our favorite reasons to choose a potato? A medium skin-on potato has more potassium than a banana, delivers almost one-third of the vitamin C we need every day, and has 3 grams of plant-based protein.

Potatoes—The Original Jack-o'-Lantern

It’s not Halloween without a jack-o’-lantern. But did you know this tradition started with potatoes? The Irish would carve spooky faces into spuds to scare away an evil spirit called Stingy Jack.

Try out this historic trend and make your own potato jack-o’-lanterns or jack-o’-taters, as we like to call them.

There’s no need to toss the potato on November 1! A carved-out potato can be cut into small pieces for Fall Harvest Mashed Potatoes or other delicious dishes.

Spooky Spud Stamps

Because of their hardy texture, raw potatoes are an ideal craft tool for making spooky spud stamps. While adults carve the potatoes, younger artists can add their own spin to these handmade stamps by choosing designs and acting as master painters.
