Debby C. is one of 26 Speedy Spuds who will run the 2026 Pittsburgh Marathon dressed in a potato costume.

Hi! I’m from Idaho Falls, Idaho, where I grew up more of a “piano potato” than an athlete—spending hours practicing piano and happily eating potatoes with every meal. I studied Piano Performance in Utah and later moved to San Diego before returning to Utah with my family. After severe postpartum depression, my doctor suggested running. I reluctantly signed up for a 5K pushing my 6-month-old in a stroller—and finishing it changed my life. Running became my passion. Over the past 16 years I’ve completed 197 marathons (including ultras) and hope to run my 200th marathon on my 46th birthday this March while continuing my goal of finishing all 50 states.
What race are you running?
Half Marathon
Why are potatoes your go-to fuel?
Potatoes are perfect running fuel—great before, during, and after races. I struggle with gels, but salted baby potatoes at ultramarathons are easy to digest, provide sodium, and even have more potassium than bananas (which I definitely don’t like!).
Favorite potato dish:
Funeral potatoes (cheesy hash brown casserole) are a classic favorite, though French fries and a loaded baked potato are close behind.
Why did you enter the Speedy Spud contest?
I saw the Speedy Spud booth at the Salt Lake Marathon and loved seeing potatoes celebrated as fuel. Pittsburgh felt like the perfect race since my son recently lived there and wants to show me the city.
How are you prepping for the race?
In March I’m attempting eight marathons in eight days across eight states. After a few more races in April, I’m excited to enjoy Pittsburgh’s bridges—and plenty of potatoes—on race day.
