Meet Speedy Spud Adam

Adam K. is one of 26 Speedy Spuds who will run the 2026 Pittsburgh Marathon dressed in a potato costume.

My running journey started in 2013 after I quit my high school basketball team and needed a new way to stay active. I began running from my house to a park and back—without even knowing the distance. Eventually I discovered it was four miles round trip and decided to sign up for my town’s marathon. During training, my father was battling brain cancer, so I began fundraising for the American Brain Tumor Association in his honor. In 2014 I finished my first marathon and raised over $4,000 for brain cancer research. Since then I’ve completed 11+ marathons across different cities, states, and even countries, all inspired by running in honor of my dad.

What race are you running?

Half Marathon

Why are potatoes your go-to fuel?

Potatoes are incredibly versatile and perfect for fueling runs. Whether it’s breakfast potatoes, baked potatoes, fries, mashed potatoes, or even potato chips, they provide the carbs I need to keep running strong.

Favorite potato dish:

Chicken and gnocchi soup in the winter, or steak and mashed potatoes in the summer.

Why did you enter the Speedy Spud contest?

It combines two things I love—running and carbs. The chance to celebrate potatoes as great race fuel while running in a potato costume sounded too fun to pass up.

How are you prepping for the race?

By ramping up my mileage and fueling the process with plenty of potato chips, fries, and mashed potatoes.
