Meet Speedy Spud Anna L.

Anna L. is one of 26 Speedy Spuds who will run the 2026 Pittsburgh Marathon dressed in a potato costume.

I’m from Canfield, Ohio, and I’ve been running for over 15 years. I started with cross country and track in middle school, where I discovered two things: I love running and I love the snacks afterward. After college I worked in hospitality, which made consistent training tough, but about five years ago I recommitted to running and things took off. Since then I’ve completed four marathons, nine half marathons (with Pittsburgh becoming number ten!), and more than fifty 5Ks. When I’m not running, I enjoy cooking, kickboxing, traveling, and spending time with family and friends—plus hanging out with my two very spoiled French Bulldogs, Najee and Franco.

What race are you running?

Half Marathon

Why are potatoes your go-to fuel?

Potatoes have always been a staple in my life. Growing up in a meat-and-potatoes town in an Italian and Irish family meant they were always around, and they’re still my favorite vegetable. They’re versatile, satisfying, and the perfect fuel for running.

Favorite potato dish:

Gnocchi, without question. Growing up we made homemade gnocchi with fresh tomato sauce, and it turned cooking into a family event. It’s still my favorite carb-load before a race.

Why did you enter the Speedy Spud contest?

I love any excuse to run through Pittsburgh, and the chance to do it as a Speedy Spud sounded too fun to pass up. It combines running, food, and one of my favorite cities—and running around dressed as a potato would definitely make for a great story.

How are you prepping for the race?

I’m preparing with a mix of training and potatoes. I’m following a half marathon plan on the Runna app, logging miles with my Stride & Sip Run Club, and making sure I stay fully committed to the potato-fueled lifestyle.
