Meet Speedy Spud Courtney

Courtney L. is one of 26 Speedy Spuds who will run the 2026 Pittsburgh Marathon dressed in a potato costume.

I started running after being diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes and realizing I needed to turn my health around. Running became the way I did that. I now live in Altoona, Pennsylvania with my husband and our two boys.

What race are you running?

Half Marathon

Why are potatoes your go-to fuel?

After a lot of trial and error with blood sugar control, I found that potatoes work really well for me. They’re easy to digest, don’t spike my blood sugar much, and they taste great.

Favorite potato dish:

Scalloped potatoes are my favorite, with French fries as a close second.

Why did you enter the Speedy Spud contest?

My love of potatoes combined with the fun of running made applying for Speedy Spud an easy choice—it feltlike the perfect match.

How are you prepping for the race?

Right now I’m following (and sometimes getting bullied by!) my Garmin training program while preparing for the Pittsburgh Half Marathon. It’s a love–hate relationship, but I’m excited to see how it helps me improve from last year.
