Meet Speedy Spud Derek

Derek C. is one of 26 Speedy Spuds who will run the 2026 Pittsburgh Marathon dressed in a potato costume.

I’ve been running for over 40 years and still love it just as much as when I started. I usually look for a half marathon to run in the spring and another in the fall or winter, which is why the Pittsburgh Half Marathon has been on my radar.

What race are you running?

Half Marathon

Why are potatoes your go-to fuel?

Potatoes are simple, satisfying, and classic running fuel—sometimes the simplest foods are the best.

Favorite potato dish:

My go-to is roasted Yukon Gold potatoes: cut in half, wrapped in foil with butter, Parmesan, and mesquite smoked sea salt, then roasted at 400°F for about an hour. As chef Joël Robuchon once said when asked about his last meal—roasted potatoes with butter. What more do you need?

Why did you enter the Speedy Spud contest?

I love running and I love potatoes—what more do you need in life?

How are you prepping for the race?

I keep a consistent running routine and look for a half marathon each season to stay motivated and ready for race day.
