Meet Speedy Spud Josh W.

Josh W. is one of 26 Speedy Spuds who will run the 2026 Pittsburgh Marathon dressed in a potato costume.

The basics: I am a 36-year-old social worker living in Erie, PA. My wife (we just recently married last year) is originally from Pittsburgh and I consider it my second home. I bleed black and gold. We are both very avid endurance athletes. I started running shortly after college as both a physical and mental health outlet, from there I focused on pushing my limits. I have run a few prior marathons and one 50k. Over the past few years, I’ve gotten more into cycling, and this year I will be doing my first Half Ironman in June. My wife is more of a badass, she runs 100 milers. When we are not running or cycling, we are often camping or hiking. We have two dogs and two cats that take up the rest of our spare time!

What race are you running?

Half Marathon

Why are potatoes your go-to fuel?

Potatoes are an essential fuel! They are a a nutrient-dense, whole-food carbohydrate source that provides the sustained energy I need for long-distance efforts like the Pittsburgh Half Marathon.

Favorite potato dish:

What goes best with French fries – Heinz ketchup

Why did you enter the Speedy Spud contest?

I thought it was an interesting contest and for a solid cause that I could get behind.

How are you prepping for the race?

I can’t say I am doing anything in particular for the race. I am using this race as a half-marathon prep for my half Ironman.
