Maura D. is one of 26 Speedy Spuds who will run the 2026 Pittsburgh Marathon dressed in a potato costume.

I was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and now my husband and I have the incredible opportunity to raise our two boys in the same city that shaped me. Running has become an important part of my life and something I truly love. As a mother of two active boys, it helps me stay fit and energized so I can keep up with them. I enjoy running in many ways, whether it’s taking my dog out, having my oldest son join me, or simply using that time to reset. Running is how I start my day with focus or unwind at the end of it by relieving stress. Over time, I’ve completed several 5Ks and half-marathons, and it continues to be a meaningful part of my routine and overall well-being. I am currently training to run a half marathon, and I’m especially excited for the opportunity to race in my favorite city, Pittsburgh.
What race are you running?
Half Marathon
Why are potatoes your go-to fuel?
Potatoes are my go-to fuel because they are rich in carbohydrates, providing the energy needed to power through runs. They’re also incredibly versatile, with so many ways to enjoy them while still getting the nutrients my body needs.
Favorite potato dish:
My favorite potato dish is pierogies—filled with potatoes, of course—and a close second would be Potato Patch fries from Kennywood.
Why did you enter the Speedy Spud contest?
This race gives me the chance to do something fun and meaningful: run through the city I love while dressed as a potato and help highlight the benefits of such a simple, powerful fuel source for runners.
How are you prepping for the race?
I’m preparing by staying consistent with my runs (often with my dog), incorporating strength training, prioritizing rest, and, of course, eating plenty of potatoes.
