Meet Speedy Spud Melissa

Melissa K. is one of 26 Speedy Spuds who will run the 2026 Pittsburgh Marathon dressed in a potato costume.

I started running with my church group in 3rd grade, and more seriously in 7th grade as a way to make friends when I moved to a new town. I continued to be competitive throughout college, running for Youngstown State University. Now I just run for fun! I’m currently in New Castle, PA. Fun fact about me is that I’m an identical triplet (yes they also run), and my last name is “milk” spelled backwards.

What race are you running?

Half Marathon

Why are potatoes your go-to fuel?

I love potatoes because they’re satisfying no matter how they’re made (French fries, tots, mashed, in a soup).

Favorite potato dish:

I have several! Potato Salmon chowder. There’s full, which really compliments the potato. I also really like a Brunel sprout/ sweet potato salad. But I’m also a big fan of a classic breakfast potato!

Why did you enter the Speedy Spud contest?

It’s fun!! It combines two of my favorite things, food and running!

How are you prepping for the race?

I run in general to stay in shape, but I also incorporate walking and hiking to balance my workload. It’s also important to have full balanced meals to keep my training moving forward.
