Meet Speedy Spud Michael

Michael F. is one of 26 Speedy Spuds who will run the 2026 Pittsburgh Marathon dressed in a potato costume.

I’m from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and started running consistently about 10–12 years ago. I used to bike a lot, but after constant bike issues I wanted something simpler that would keep my cardio up. A few weekly runs turned into joining running groups, making great friends, and eventually running multiple marathons and plenty of half marathons along the way.

What race are you running?

Half Marathon

Why are potatoes your go-to fuel?

They’re healthy, easy, and well-balanced. Potatoes are versatile—you can make everything from fries to hash browns, and they always hit the spot.

Favorite potato dish:

Potatoes Au Gratin. Cheese and potatoes—what’s not to love?

Why did you enter the Speedy Spud contest?

Honestly, it just sounded cool. I like the idea of inspiring runners—even if that inspiration sometimes comes in the form of comic relief.

How are you prepping for the race?

I’m keeping my weekly mileage consistent and running with friends as much as possible. I also run with Achilles, an organization that supports athletes with disabilities, which keeps me motivated and grateful every time I run.
