Halloween is all about fun, fright, and tasty treats. While candy is the main attraction, there’s no reason savory bites can’t join the party.
Whether you’re hosting a few friends or throwing a monster mash, a well curated snack table is sure to satisfy and delight any crowd. This year, the chefs at Potatoes USA are sharing their tricks to take your Halloween spread to the next level by including savory potatoes.
Potatoes on a grazing board are the perfect complement to balance the sweetness of typical Halloween fare. They’re not just fun and delicious; they also bring a hearty, nutritious option to the table, keeping your guests satisfied while still indulging in the season’s spirit.
The Perfect Party Trick: Crafting Your Spooky Potato Spread
A variety of textures and flavors are key to the perfect board, so why not start off with a few varieties of potatoes?
Chef RJ’s Tip: Don’t worry about being the fanciest potato (unless you want to!). Focus instead on tried-and-true recipes that come together quickly and easily.
“The perfect board features a balance of sweet and salty flavors. A Halloween grazing board is the perfect opportunity to balance out that sweet candy with savory potatoes. You can mix and match your favorite potato recipes for a spread that’s both fun and satisfying,” said RJ Harvey, Director of Culinary at Potatoes USA.
To craft your potato board, feature a few types of potatoes. We love:
- Tots add great texture.
- Some type of roasted potatoes, like these potato poppers.
- Crinkle-cut thick potato chips for that extra crunch (you can add these last to fill in any leftover spaces on your board). Crinkle-cut chips are great for dipping, too.
- Mini potato skins are also a crowd-pleaser!
Next, choose your add-ons. You can’t go wrong with these choices!
- A variety of cheeses (three is usually the perfect number). We like aged white cheddar, smoked gouda wheel slices, and pre-sliced pepper jack to cut down on prep time.
- Regular and spicy salami, pre-sliced to save time.
- Whole pepperoncini.
- Pimento-stuffed olives – they’re perfect for a spookier spread!
- Grapes for aesthetic appeal.
- Dips like chili sauce and fig jam, placed in separate bowls on the board.
Why Potatoes?
Potatoes are more than just a delicious snack. They’re also an all-star vegetable with 30% of your daily vitamin C, a good source of potassium, and 3 grams of plant-based protein (5.3 oz skin-on potato). Potatoes are the perfect snack to help your guests fuel their day, or, in this case, a frightful night.
