Meet Speedy Spud Jay

Jay O. is one of 26 Speedy Spuds who will run the 2026 Pittsburgh Marathon dressed in a potato costume.

Hi! I’m a 57-year-old who tries to live life like a Roadrunner cartoon—though I’m usually more Wile E. Coyote, running into the occasional painted tunnel. I work in large-scale computer deployments, play guitar, and have been married for 33 years. My two sons are graduating this year—one from Rutgers and the other from Princeton for grad school. I grew up in Rockaway Beach, NY and now live in “glorious” New Jersey. I also have a Border Collie who constantly reminds me I haven’t taken him on enough walks.

What race are you running?

Half Marathon

Why are potatoes your go-to fuel?

I like to keep my carbs simple—baked, boiled, or mashed potatoes are perfect for that. I’m especially happy with a baked potato.

Favorite potato dish:

Shepherd’s pie. Mashed potatoes with that crispy top are hard to beat.

Why did you enter the Speedy Spud contest?

I’ve been a fierce potato competitor ever since childhood games of Hot Potato. As everyone knows there are no winners in Hot Potato—but if we’re playing, prepare to get burned!

How are you prepping for the race?

I started running after casually promising I’d run a 5K with only two weeks of training, and I’ve been hooked ever since. Right now I’m training for the Asbury Park Half and a few other races. Mostly, though, I just like to keep things fun—getting a little silly is part of what makes running and life enjoyable.
